Finding Support
Finding out that you have a diagnosis of congestive heart failure may be scary. An initial response to a new diagnosis may include fear and depression.
Koenig found that as many as 37% of hospitalized patients with congestive heart failure meet the critieria for major depression while an additional 32% may have minor depression (as cited in Freedland et al., 2003, p. 125). It is well documented that depression may have detrimental effects on your overall health. Additionally, depression may place your already weakened heart at a greater risk for poor prognosis. Freedland et al. (2003, p. 126) states that depression may exacerbate (worsen) the symptoms of congestive heart failure as well as your functional mobility.
You should speak to your physician if you are having feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, decreased enjoyment of favorite activities, anxiety, emptiness, or sadness (Richardson et al., 2011, p. 7). As always, seek emergency help if you are having thoughts of suicide.
